ABSTRACT

Traditional efforts to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation care in post-acute hospitals have faltered as they have focused on the bottom line. The need for services for patients recovering from illness or injury after hospitalization is increasing. Appreciative Inquiry offers an alternative framework to policies and metrics. In a project sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, AI was employed to bring to light the ways in which staff achieve exceptional patient outcomes and safety at high- performing rehabilitation hospitals to broadcast and motivate similar achievements across peer institutions.
