The Donkey in the Well, Revisited: Using Golf to Overcome Injuries, Illnesses and Challenges


Fred Gutierrez, despite being paralysed on the entire left side of his body, wanted to learn how to play golf. The book, Half Paralyzed Twice Strong, that he wrote with Rich O’Brien and Falter, chronicles their amazing story. Here is the multimedia feature story, as written by Al Tays of the Golf Channel.

Rich O’Brien was a college golf coach who taught over 1,000 players. In 2008 he suffered catastrophic injuries, included eight that are normally fatal. His long road to recovery included 12,000 hours of rehab, led to a dangerous addiction to prescription painkillers and PTSD, lasting nearly four years, but the lessons he learned allow him to mentor others with “Golf Therapy”.
